Panasonic Lumix G100 review
Summary
The Lumix G100 is one of the most dough-like mirrorless cameras around, but packs a decent feature article-set with a well-stacked-in viewfinder, fully-articulated side-hinged riddle, external mic input and a canny constitutional three-mic system. Panasonic may be pitching it primarily at vloggers, but it also makes for a very nice compact general-purpose photographic camera that can strike different lenses. In price of vlogging I found optical and standard electronic stabilization delivered fair results, although mind of the tighter crop when using the strongest electronic style. Filming in 4k also incurs a tight prune even without stabilisation, devising it unsuitable for vloggers or those who like to see more of their surroundings. As for autofocus, the G100 was well, certainly amend than the Canon G7X, simply not as confident as rivals with stage-detect surgery Dual Pixel AF, so be warned if you savor moving back and Forth River when motion-picture photography. For pure vlogging and video cosmos, I look the more confident AF, practical 4k and longer recording clips give the Sony ZV-1 desirable. Simply Eastern Samoa an all arounder, the G100 is more than tempting with its viewfinder and chance to switch lenses. Practise withal keep an heart on the price of the Lumix G90 / G95 as it gives you IBIS, unlimited recording, an OLED viewfinder, headphone jack and a more flexible kit zoom for non a good deal more. Meanwhile Canon's EOS M50 also remains a compelling prime for vloggers with first-class autofocus so long every bit you forget about 4k. The choice is yours, although I love that both Sony and Panasonic are now taking built-in microphones more seriously with more improved audio American Samoa a solution.

The Panasonic Lumix G100 is a compact mirrorless camera designed for vlogging and creative video, although it's also perfectly respectable for still photos. Announced in June 2020, Panasonic let me try out an just about final model to consider what it lav do. Below is my first-looks video review (available 1pm BST) which includes scads of video and vlogging tests, only if you prefer to read a written interpretation of the highlights, keep scrolling!
Above: The G100 is probably best-described atomic number 3 a mini G90 operating theater G95 and is available in a kit with the 12-32mm rapid climb – in the Micro Four Thirds World, that's same to 24-64mm. This lens is a collapsing aim which needs to equal artful to the 12mm position before you can start shot. When you're ready, flick the change around the modal value dial to force-upwards – note the generously-sized TV record push. Then troll the rachis you have the choice of composing with the screen or an electronic viewfinder – the damage place rules out an OLED panel, so Panasonic has opted for an LCD which to my sensitive eyes suffered from a few rainbow artefacts As I glanced around, just non as badly atomic number 3 field of operations-sequential panels. On the plus side, IT's a large image.
Above: Interim the 3in sieve is a side-hinged, fully-articulated invention which can flip and twist to any position, and it as wel inherits Panasonic's broad graze of pinch controls. There's no tally lightness to indicate when you're recording, but the screen provides echt feedback, non just with the usual red ikon, but also with an optional ruby-red border roughly the frame to show when you're ringing.
In terms of barrage, the BLG-10E pack should be good for around 270 photos operating theater up to 90 minutes of 1080 video recording. In my tests I managed nine ten minute clips of 4k TV on a single charge, surgery 90 minutes in total.
Higher up: The Lumix G100 is equipped with a 3.5mm mike input that's considerately positioned preceding the screen hinge, allowing you to connect a mic and not have the cable occlusion the display.
Above: I tried my Rode Wireless Go with it and you'll hear it in my video look back.
Above: On the right side are the Micro USB and Small HDMI ports, the past can be used for charging merely not powering the camera and unhappily you can't use information technology as a USB webcam with Panasonic's recent software. You can however take the HDMI output and use that with an HDMI capture device and a clean alternative is available. Note the HDMI is only available up to 1080p and in that location's no 10 bit output either. In that respect's no headphone output, an advantage of the G90.
Above: Panasonic has armed the G100 with its most recent 20 Megapixel Small Four Thirds detector, the same I believe as the G90 / G95, which means the photo calibre should also match the G9. This as wel way the G100 employs Panasonic's contrast-based DFD autofocus system which is promptly for single AF but lacks the greater trust of rival stage detect AF systems especially for continuous tracking. That said, in my video tests it held onto the subject ameliorate than, say, the Canon G7X series and I'll express you a bunch of examples in a moment. Note the G100 does however lack the sensor stabilization of the higher-end bodies in the serial, so you'll be relying on lens-based optical and or electronic stabilisation to reduce the wobbles. If you want IBIS, get under one's skin the G90.
Ahead discussing video, I plant the 20 Megapixel resolution more than sufficiency for general picture taking and was slaked by the degree of detail, although the 12-32 kit whizz isn't American Samoa flexible arsenic the 12-60 in the G90 bundles. Like all Micro Four Thirds cameras, the select looks best at lower ISOs and I'd try to delay below 1600 for the best results. If you on a regular basis photograph in very dim conditions at high ISOs, you should consider a camera with a large sensor or get a brighter Lens. Luckily with the Micro Four Thirds mount, the G100 has access to a wealth of alternative lenses if you desire, including many with very bright apertures that help keep apart the sensitivity down.
Above: Moving onto movies, the G100 can film 720p at 25 or 30p, 1080 at 24 to 60p, at adequate 28Mbit/s, or 4k at 24, 25 surgery 30p at 100Mbit/s. Clips are limited to uncomplete an hour for 1080 dormy to 30p, reducing to 20 transactions for 1080 at 50 or 60p, or just tenner proceedings in 4k. The larger G90 allows unlimited transcription times, and if you disable the rut warnings, Sony's ZV1 put up also memorialise longer than half an hr.
Above: High speed video has been moved to a new S&Q operating theatre slow and flying position on the mode dial. Like Sony, this lets you record videos that are faster or slower than regular, with a maximum retardation of fourfold in 1080. You can control an example of the slow motion in my video review.
Preceding: With happy instauration in take care, the G100 offers a bunch of guides that point a wide salmagundi of crops and look ratios from cinemascope movies to vertical phones and everything in-between. You lavatory also dim the outside areas to make it easier to focus on the portion you'll be cropping after. The G100 can besides detect vertical TV and maintain the orientation when copied to a phone or editor, patc one of the Function buttons on the camera provides a shortcut by default to fire-dormie the Wifi connection for transferring pictures and videos.
Above: Every bit a photographic camera aimed at vloggers, it's non surprising to get Panasonic also offering a tripod grip accessory, the DMW-SHGR1 which is also congruous with a gang of firmware-updated older models including the G9, G90 and GH5. It connects to the Small USB port and offers buttons to take photos, start and stop transcription or ship the tv camera to sleep, while the grip opens-up into three legs to become a mini tripod. It's very reminiscent in design to those Manfrotto miniskirt tripods, but smaller and I found information technology a identical useful ancillary for the G100 whether motion-picture photography handheld OR as an ad-hoc stomach. Hold open an eye open for deals happening the G100 outfit that let in it.
Above: One of the well-nig interesting aspects of the G100 are its inbuilt microphones: three in all, ii on either side of the viewfinder head and one towards the tooshie. The G100 uses Nokia's Ozo arrangement, also available connected some smartphones to render sound directivity, focusing along the subject or embracing ambient surroundings.
Preceding: In that location's quintuplet modes to choose from: Tracking works with human face detection to focus the mike on your font as you move around, Presence forces the mics to focus on straight ahead, Rearward uses the rear-positioned mic to more clearly record sounds future from behindhand the camera, same narrating a picture, spell Surround uses every three mics to captivate greater ambience.
Above: When tracking is enabled, you'll see littler jet icons happening either side of the face detection frame to signal the mics should also be following your position and paying less attention to other sounds.
Depending on the movie caliber and electronic stabilisation, the G100 applies a multifariousness of crops with the strongest rarified when filming in 4k or with electronic stabilisation set to High. I have lots of examples and comparisons of the stabilisation, focusing, movie caliber and audio quality in my video review.
Panasonic Lumix G100 verdict-so-far
The Lumix G100 is one of the nigh compact mirrorless cameras around, but packs a decent feature-set with a built-in viewfinder, fully-articulated slope-hinged screen, external mic stimulant and a intelligent built-in three-mic arrangement. Panasonic may be pitching it primarily at vloggers, but it also makes for a precise nice clay-like general camera that can take different lenses. I was fond of the earlier GM series, and in a way the G100 is their spiritual successor.
In footing of vlogging, the G100 ticks several principal boxes including a screen that faces forward, an input for an external mic and a hotshoe to mount it, as well as a decent stacked-in solid scheme that's powerful whether you're in front surgery behind the camera. Your mileage will variegate regarding stabilisation, but I found the combination of optical and standard electronic delivered good results, although beware of the tighter cut back when using the strongest lepton mode. Filming in 4k besides incurs a tight snip even without stabilisation, fashioning it less eligible for vloggers or those who like to see to a greater extent of their milieu. As for autofocus, the G100's contrast-supported system was good, certainly better than the Canon G7X, merely non as confident atomic number 3 the better phase-find rivals, so be warned if you enjoy moving to and fro when filming.
The biggest rival for the G100 is the Sony ZV-1 with both costing around the same amount. The G100 has the benefit of a viewfinder and interchangeable lenses, too as a built-in mic system that's better at picking up healthy from behind, but the ZV-1 has a more confident autofocus system, longer recording clips, more practical 4k and the deltoid benefit of a windshield accessory for its made-up-in mics. Revealingly, patc the G100 has a bigger sensor, its kit couples it with a dimmer lens, then the overall quality and potential for background-blurring is in reality quite similar unless you trade the crystalline lens on the Panasonic, and that may mean losing modality stabilisation.
It's a knotty choice, although I feel for pure vlogging and video creation, the compounding of more confident autofocus and less severe cropping makes the Sony ZV-1 preferable. Conversely, as an entirely-libertine, the G100 is more tantalizing with its viewfinder and prospect to switch lenses. That said, if you like the idea of a Micro Tetrad Thirds photographic camera, do keep an eye on the price of the Lumix G90 / G95 as IT gives you IBIS, unlimited recording, an OLED viewfinder, headphone jack and a to a greater extent flexible kit zoom for non a great deal more. Meanwhile Canon's EOS M50 also remains a compelling choice for vloggers with excellent autofocus so long as you forget nearly 4k. The choice is yours, although I love that some Sony and Panasonic are now taking built-in microphones much earnestly with some improved audio as a solution.
